Other Interviews

Other Interviews!

Through Tom (on the course) we interviewed his brother and dad and his brother's friends dad also. Tom's dad runs a football club in Pudsey so we went to watch them train. They had some really interesting things to say. One of the guys called Dave, was in Turkey when the two Leeds United fans got stabbed and killed. It was interesting as he has a big persona, he seems to joke about everything, much to his son's embarrassment. Despite this scary persona, Dave bowed his head when Tom's dad mentioned the two Leeds United fans that got killed, suggesting he didn't want to speak about it. During this process I am reminded constantly of how football brings people together, yet now I've been introduced to an event that has ripped apart this togetherness.  Dave, who was also in the service crew, jokes that the bad reputation of Leeds was 'deserved' and he didn't want it to be spoiled by, 'a few idiots coming in and behaving well'. It is ironic to me that he knew two people stabbed through football rivalries, yet jokes about hooliganism being a worthy thing. Perhaps his light hearted take on hooliganism masks the tragedy. Through making this documentary, I've realised I am much more interested in people's actual stories, not necessarily to do with Leeds United. Dave was an interesting character and one interview sitting next to his son I felt didn't capture him entirely.

We also interviewed the people that own the Elland road cafe and Graveley's chip shop. The guy that worked in the chip shop was a lovely honest man, he said he hadn't been to a match since working there despite loving LUFC. The guy that owned the sandwich shop had also owned The White Hart for 20 years, he also (of course) knows Geordie and is part of the Benidorm crew, he apparently 'does all the booking', his wife who was making him a sandwich argued that she did it for them. He seemed fairly frosty when giving an interview, but I guess that's what a landlord of a LUFC pub would have to be like.

I think all along I wanted to capture the lives of these fans and how they're not what they seem. It's been difficult to capture this, as people are different in front of the camera. Crazy Steve off camera told us stories about his life, saying he had 3 children he didn't see, he had a 'crack baby', and his involvement with crime. However, he obviously wouldn't say this on camera. In the documentary he just looks like a devoted Leeds fan, but in actuality he's someone that has in some sense had an unfortunate life, but you don't see this. I feel I'm much more interested in the characters I've interviewed; What the Norwegians life's are like; What it was like for Dave in Turkey and how he's dealt with it; Steve and Steve's life since their hooliganism days have gone. It makes me think that anyone you meet has a story and a documentary could be made about pretty much anyone you meet as long as you wait and find it.
